In an effort to make this unit of study as concrete and visible to the children as possible, I have arranged for several visitors/volunteers to come in to our classroom to provide a “job overview”.
The preschool class has outlined questions to ask each community helper in hopes of driving discussion and learning.
We are greatly looking forward to this experience! :)
Possible Community Helpers:
- Police Officers
- Mail carriers
- Bus Drivers
- Fire Fighters
(Thank you in advance for your help, and for making the children’s preschool experience so meaningful!)
Today, we had a retired fire captain and fire fighter visit our classroom during our enrichment cluster.
Mr. Reilly is a retired fire captain from Waterbury, CT. He now volunteers as a firefighter in Goshen.
Mr. Reilly answered all of our questions! We learned so much, including not to ever, ever be afraid if a firefighter comes to rescue us. Seeing Mr. Reilly in his uniform with a mask, and breathing in an air tank, helped us to better understand how firefighters look. Firefighters are brave and caring community helpers that spend their time helping many people. Maybe, some of us will decide to be firefighters when we grow up!
After we visited with Mr. Reilly, we worked in the grocery store and/or played in the dramatic play center dressing up as various community helpers.
