In continuing our discussion on Kwanzza, we were introduced to the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
The seven principles (nguzo saba) of Kwanzaa utilize Kiswahili words: unity (umoja), self-determination (kujichagulia), collective work and responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics (ujamaa), purpose (nia), creativity (kuumba), and faith (imani). Each of the seven candles signify the principles. Like the Jewish Hannakah, candles are used to represent concepts of the holiday.

We focused on the first principle - umoja - which means unity.
We worked together to create unity chain as a Kwanzaa decoration in our classroom. We dictated ways that we work together and/or play together with family and friends, and Miss Gray wrote it on a link. We then glued the links together to make our own umoja chain.
